What our clients say

Frequently asked questions

What is personalized natural nutrition?

It's a nutritional approach based on natural foods (meat, organs, bones, vegetables) specifically designed for your pet's individual needs, considering their age, breed, weight, activity level, health conditions, and food preferences.

What's the difference between this service and buying super premium commercial food?

Commercial foods, even super premium ones, are formulated for population averages. Our plans are individualized: we adjust ingredients, proportions, and supplementation according to your pet's unique needs, with continuous veterinary follow-up.

Does the Mascotica.com nutritional plan replace my regular vet?

No. Mascotica.com is a complementary service: Dr. Karla specializes in veterinary clinical nutrition and works alongside your pet's primary veterinarian. For medical diagnoses, surgeries, or emergencies, your in-person vet remains essential.

Do you only treat digestive problems or also prevention?

We address both cases. We work on prevention through optimal nutrition in healthy pets, as well as therapeutic management of existing conditions (allergies, IBD, pancreatitis, cancer, kidney disease, and other chronic pathologies).

How does the initial assessment process work?

The initial assessment includes a complete veterinary consultation where medical history, current body condition, and eating habits are analyzed, and necessary tests are reviewed. With this information we design a customized nutritional plan.

Does my pet need blood tests before the nutritional consultation?

For pets with chronic conditions (CKD, pancreatitis, diabetes, hypothyroidism), recent lab results are very helpful and Dr. Karla will factor them into the plan. For healthy pets, they are not required but recommended for senior animals. Dr. Karla will guide you through this during the initial evaluation.

Do you offer virtual or only in-person consultations?

Most consultations are virtual (online). In very exceptional cases and when geographically close, they may be in-person at Dr. Alvarado's discretion.

What does the nutritional plan include?

It includes a personalized recipe with portions, preparation guide, rations, dietary transition, and supplement recommendations when appropriate.

How long does it take to receive the nutritional plan after the consultation?

The personalized nutritional plan is typically delivered in the days following the video call, depending on the complexity of the case. Dr. Karla prepares it individually with portions, recipes, and a preparation guide. Exact timelines are coordinated during the consultation.

What is a plan "adjustment"?

It's a specific modification to substitute non-tolerated or rejected ingredients (e.g., pork allergy or chicken rejection) while maintaining nutritional balance.

Can my pet still eat kibble while on the nutritional plan?

It depends on the case. For conditions where diet is part of the treatment (pancreatitis, CKD, allergies), a complete transition is part of the clinical plan. For healthy pets, a gradual transition is sometimes possible. Dr. Karla evaluates each situation individually during the consultation.

How long does it take to see results?

It depends on the goal and initial condition. Many guardians report improvements in energy and digestion within 2-4 weeks. For chronic conditions or weight changes, the process can take 2-3 months with periodic adjustments.

How does WhatsApp or email support work?

It's available for the period indicated in each plan starting from the consultation.

How long does it take to get a response?

Essential Plan and Pathologies Plan: 48–72 business hours. Advanced Plan: 24 business hours.

Do you handle emergencies?

No. For emergencies, visit your in-person veterinary clinic. Online consultations cover nutritional assessment and planned adjustments.

Do you see pets outside of Costa Rica?

Yes. Consultations are 100% online, so we serve pets in any country in Latin America and worldwide. You just need an internet connection for the video call and access to fresh ingredients in your locality.

How do I schedule an online consultation from another country?

The process is the same for all countries: complete the clinical form on our website, make payment in USD, and we'll coordinate the video call at a convenient time for your timezone. The nutritional plan is adapted to ingredients available in your country.

What if the ingredients in the nutritional plan aren't available in my country?

The nutritional plan is designed with locally available ingredients in mind. During the initial assessment, Dr. Karla asks what foods you have access to in your area, and the plan is adapted to that reality. You don't need to import any special ingredients.
